Soft lips all fall long: My DIY beet & cocoa lip balms.
With the arrival of fall, the wind, and the cold, lips dry out quickly. This year, I wanted simple lip balms made with just a few ingredients I’m familiar with—ones that are fun to make. Here are my two favorites.
Two balms, one base
The base (common to both): beeswax, shea butter, and coconut oil.
- Beeswax forms a protective layer that prevents drying and gives the balm its hold.
- shea butter Deeply nourishes and provides comfort.
- Coconut oil softens, moisturizes, and gives the balm a melt-in-your-lips texture that glides effortlessly over the lips, with a hint of exotic sweetness.
Balm No. 1, “Beet Rose”: Beet powder gives a natural, very subtle pink tint that turns to raspberry pink depending on the amount used. It’s a skincare product with a hint of color.
Balm n°2, "sweet cocoa": Cocoa powder adds a chocolatey aroma and a lovely honey-brown hue. It's the more indulgent of the two.
How are they made?
- Gently melt the beeswax, shea butter, and coconut oil in a double boiler.
- Remove from the heat, then stir in the powder (beet or cocoa), mixing well to avoid lumps.
- Verser rapidement dans des petits pots.
- Let it set without touching it, then close it.
It's quick, doesn't require any complicated equipment, and the result is very satisfying.
Their Benefits
These balms protect lips from the cold and wind, nourish them, soothe dry or chapped patches, and give them a lovely glow. Their ingredient lists are short and easy to read, so you know exactly what you’re putting on your lips.
And what about Ayurveda in all of this?
These recipes aren't traditional Indian recipes, and I'd rather make that clear. But they are in keeping with the Ayurvedic philosophy:
- Snehana, smoothness. Ayurveda places great emphasis on using oils to soften the skin. In the fall and winter—seasons when Vata (dry, cold, light) increases—this is especially beneficial for lips that tend to dry out.
- Coconut oil (nārikela taila) is a classic Ayurvedic remedy, especially in southern India, particularly in Kerala. It is known for its refreshing and soothing properties, which balance Pitta, and has long been used for skin and hair care.
- Beeswax has long been used in creamy preparations.
- Simple, natural ingredients, chosen thoughtfully, with a slow, soothing gesture: it’s also a little self-care ritual.
Note that
- Beeswax is not plant-based, so these balms are not suitable for vegans.
- Coconut oil melts at around 24 °C: in the summer or near a heat source, the balm may soften. It’s best to keep it in a cool place.
- If you have sensitive skin or a known allergy to any of the ingredients, it's best to test the product before use.
- The powders may leave a slight tint on the lips and fabric.
- Store away from heat for several months. Apply with clean fingers.
Let's make them together!
What I enjoy most is making them with others. I organize cosmetics workshops at my home in Rosey, in a friendly atmosphere, with friends or family. You mix the ingredients, choose your color, and leave with your very own lip balms. It’s all done in a cheerful spirit, often with a cup of herbal tea to enjoy during the workshop.
It's also a great idea for a birthday, a bachelorette party, or an afternoon with friends.
