Understanding Ayurveda

ayurveda

Ayurveda, whose name means “Science of Life,” is an ancient health system that originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. Much more than just a form of natural medicine, Ayurveda is based on a holistic approach aimed at establishing a balance between body and mind, and between the individual and those around them. According to Ayurveda, illness arises from an imbalance.

The three doshas: the foundation of the Ayurvedic constitution

At the heart of Ayurvedic medicine lies a remarkably coherent system for understanding life: the theory of the three doshas. Vāta, Pitta, and Kapha are the fundamental biological forces that govern all of the physiological, psychological, and energetic functions of the human being. Far from being a simple classification of temperaments, the doshas represent dynamic principles arising from the combination of the five primordial elements—ether, air, fire, water, and earth—whose balance determines an individual’s overall state of health.

Understanding the doshas means adopting a holistic and individualized view of health, in which each person is unique in terms of their prakriti—their natural constitution—and requires a tailored therapeutic approach.
